21 July 2011 Carl Barat - French opera, new film, digital EP
Having recently performed at various festivals over the summer including Latitude and Hop Farm, Carl Barat has announced he will take part in his first opera and will be performing the lead role of Nero in a production of Pop’pea, inspired by The Coronation of Poppea by Monteverdi. This is an original world premiere production in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet from May through June 2012.
Châtelet has been behind some of the most exciting modern opera shows of modern times including Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewletts ‘Monkey Journey to the West’ and David Cronenberg and Howard Shores ‘The Fly’.
Pop’Pea - The dramatic framework for the work by Busenello, librettist for Monteverdi's original opera, has been tightened up by dramaturge Ian Burton in order to focus attention on the action forming the core of the plot. Composer Michael Torke, a celebrated contemporary American musician transformed the classical operatic music into a modern pop rock composition – a video-pop version of Monteverdi's Poppea.
Théâtre du Châtelet is a historic 2000 seated opera house erected in 1862. Since 2006, under the new impulse of Jean Luc Choplin, the Chatelet Theater has been praised for its original creations and has been noticed by the New York Times for bringing Broadway classics to France: http://www.chatelet-theatre.com/2011-2012/pop-pea,560?lg=_en
Carl has also begun filming for the new Dan Turner film ‘The Man Inside’ (Featuring hot urban musician Ashley "Bashy" Thomas, award winning actor and director Peter Mullan, Michelle Ryan and David Harewood) which started filming in Newcastle in July 2011. Written and directed by Dan Turner, the film centres around a young boxer, played by Thomas, who is haunted by the legacy of his brutal gangster father. Mullan plays his coach and surrogate father. Carl plays an unsavoury type who has led Michelle Ryan’s character astray and now refuses to let her go.
Finally, he also launches his iTunes exclusive EP of rare and live tracks today which is available for £2.49 for 8 tracks or free with a download of Carl’s debut album which was released last year.
